KATA-GURUMA  (Shoulder Wheel)

Classification. Te-waza. (Hand technique)

Kata-guruma (often referred to as the fireman's lift) From a standard grip, draw your opponent forwards and upwards on the sleeve grip by raising you own arm high this will also make room for your head, as you are doing this step forward with your opposite leg and step as deep as possible between your opponent's feet. When stepping in you should bend your knees as much as possible, whilst still drawing your opponent over your shoulders, prior to stepping in you should relinquish your lapel grip and slip your arm through the inside of your opponents thigh and grasp around the back of their hamstring. To execute the throw, you should straighten your legs lifting uke off the mat, all the time pressure should be on the sleeve helping to pull them off your shoulders when you reach the standing position, aided by the hold on the leg, which should be lifted over the back of your head, you should aim to land uke on the mat in the front quadrant with the sleeve grip.

Things to do:-
1. Draw your opponent upwards and forwards as much as possible.
2.  Go deep under the armpit with your head so your ear is near the belt or hip
3. Keep your back as straight as possible to avoid strain.
4. Get as close as possible when lifting.
Things not to do:-
a. Do not have a long sleeve grip, i.e. close to the cuff.
b. Do not bend forward at the waist.
c. Do not try to lift with your neck close or under the armpit.
d. Do not fall backwards onto your opponent.

This throw is often seen in modern competition but not usually in this form - see variations especially number two.
