KO-UCHI-GARI (Minor Inner Reap)

Classification. Ashi-waza. (Leg/Foot technique)

Ko-uchi-gari, is a fairly simple technique to learn, but requires very good timing to make it successful. As with all techniques, this has to  be acquired by practice. (as previously mentioned in these web pages, all techniques should be supervised by a qualified coaches i.e. BJA Club Coach or above)

Position and timing, you need to create some space when executing this technique as below.

First of all, you should raise your arm with the sleeve grip, and draw your opponent forward as animation above. At the same time stepping back on that side by moving your foot in an ark behind you. Almost before it is planted bring your foot on the collar grip side across in front of you turning your sole up off the mat and catch the back of your opponents forward foot before he brings it to bare any weight, by pulling it in the direction of his step he then should start to collapse to his back quarter, you should then start to press down on his clavicle with your collar grip. Forcing him down and back by pressure through his chest, at this time your sleeve grip should be starting to push down and back. (your sweeping foot needs to travel twice as fast as your driving foot at the back otherwise your opponent will place his weight on the forward and make it difficult to sweep)

Things to do:-
1. Turn your sweeping foot up so the edge on your little toe side can sweep the mat. Thus using the sole of your foot to execute the sweep.
2. Keep your shoulders in front of your hips so you are inclined forwards. Which makes it much more difficult to counter and easier to execute the throw.
3. Collar hand, turn your wrist so your thumb points upwards.
4. Push off your back driving leg which gives you more power.
Things not to do:-
a. Sweep with the heel which results in a kick.
b. Do not have a loose collar grip which results in a loss of power if you push over the top of the shoulder.
c. Do not have a long grip on the sleeve which also results in a loss of power, hold it around the back of the elbow.
d. Avoid leaning backwards as this makes you more vulnerable to counters.
