How do I become a referee ?

Providing you have the correct grade, you can become a referee, details are in the BJA Contest Rules and Refereeing Structure book, available from Head Office see Links. Course's are available. The next one will be on 30th September for Junior Referee's, and 14th October for Senior Referee's. (see Pete's referee page for more details.)

Where do I find the rules & regulations ?

How do you score an Ippon ?

By throwing your opponent, with control, largely on his back with considerable force and speed.

What is a penalty ?

A penalty is given when a contestant has committed an infringement of the rules, the severity of the infringement will determine which penalty will be given, at the same time a score will be awarded to the opponent.

What is a compound win ?

Sogo-Gacgi. where one contestant has gained a Waza-ari and his opponent subsequently receives a penalty of Keikoku. (seven point penalty) or vice versa.

What does Hansoku make mean ?

Disqualification and if this a direct Hansoku make (rather than a cumulative penalty) can result in the contestant being eliminated from the rest of the competition.
