SEOI-OTOSHI (Shoulder Drop)

Classification. Hand Technique

Unlike the previous two throws Tai-otoshi and Ko-uchi-gari, it is better to have a loose collar grip to help fitting in, this throw can be done like a deep Tai-otoshi with similar entry but I find it far easier and quicker to perform with one step. This can be made easier by either making your partner move to your sleeve side, or by moving yourself to your collar grip side. From this position you should draw your opponent upwards and forwards with your sleeve grip whilst starting to pivot on the sleeve grip side, lifting your opposite foot and pushing it across in front of tori, in order to stop him stepping forward. You should fit your collar grip elbow under his opposite armpit. You should drop low under tori's centre of gravity, with your hip deep thus fitting him on your back, keep pulling the sleeve and rotating your shoulders, making him fall over your back. This all needs to be done with a fluid action.
Things to do:-
1. Keep your collar grip relatively loose i.e. 15 cm down from the neck.
2. Keep the sleeve grip short around the back of the elbow ?
3. Lean forward but do not bend forward at the waist to much.
4. Look forward i.e. at the spot where tori will be thrown and rotate your shoulders.
Things not to do:-
a. Do not stand too close otherwise it will be difficult to turn in front of tori.
b. Do not lean backwards as this will stop you from pulling tori over and make it easier to be counted. (Usually coursed by not being close enough)
c. Do not hold the collar high as this will make it difficult to turn your arm across and fit under tori's armpit.
d. Do not look backwards at tori while executing the throw.
