TAI-OTOSHI. (Body drop)

Classification. Hand Technique.

Taiotoshi is probably one of the first techniques learnt at many clubs, it is one of the easiest to learn but one of the most difficult to perfect. British international players using this technique successfully can be counted on one hand.

Position, timing, application have to be perfect, the throw can be executed generally when your opponent moves to his rear, this may sound contradictory to beginners as it is a forward throw on two feet. But if your opponent steps backwards, his feet go behind his hips, his hips behind his shoulders, thus, putting him in a position of leaning forwards.

First of all, you should raise your arm with the sleeve grip, and start to exaggerate his forward stance. Almost at the same time stepping forward with your opposite foot, following with an upward and forward lift with the collar hand. Immediately swinging your other leg around behind you, if your kuzushi and tsukuri is applied correctly you can then continue moving your first foot/leg in front of your opponent to stop him stepping forwards, at the same time continuing to rotate his body with your sleeve grip. As he comes round your collar hand should apply a push to his head and neck with the heel of your hand, completing the throw.

Things to do:-
1. Sleeve arm, raise your elbow high and turn your hand thumb inwards.
2. Collar hand, turn your wrist so your thumb points upwards.
3. Keep you're back fairly straight avoid bending at the waist to much.
4. Although not bending forward you should lean in a forwards direction.
Things not to do:-
a. Pulling the sleeve grip into your stomach to soon.
b. Raise your elbow high on the collar grip.
c. Avoid going too deep with your hips.
d. Avoid leaning backwards.
